
Dr. Uma Vangal
Associate Dean in School of Media Studies
Dr. Uma Vangal has 32 years of experience in Media Education and has worked across the domain including Journalism, Advertising, Media Production & Media studies, Film & Film studies. Dr. Vangal has a Ph. D from University of Madras, Chennai. She has received laurels as a two-time Fulbright Fellow and an International Visitors Leadership Programme fellow. She has several publications in journals, leading newspapers (Newsminute, Indian express, National Herald, Deccan chronicle, The Hindu), film review portals (Upperstall.com) and chapters in Channelling Culture: 50 years of Television in India (OUP) .
She began her career with Anna Adarsh College, Chennai as a Guest lecturer. Subsequently, she joined the International Institute of Film & Culture (IIFC), Chennai before joining Sai University. In her career span she has been associated with Women’s Christian College (HOD MA Communication), Loyola College (Head in Charge of BSc and MSc Visual Communication (SS), LV Prasad Film & TV Academy ( Direction faculty and HOD, Media and Entertainment), Asian College of Journalism (Adjunct Faculty) and Kenyon College, Ohio as Visiting Professor of Film for three years.
As HOD and Dean at Loyola, WCC, LVPA and IIFC, she has organised International/national conferences, curated film based programmes, supervised research (doctoral and Masters) at IIT, University of Madras, designed innovative curricula (Community engaged learning and Rural resilience modules) and headed DEI initiatives on campuses. She has mentored hundreds of scripts of students who are now leading filmmakers across India and led the teams to negotiate MOUs with International Institutions.
