
Gautham Sekar

Gautham’s interests are in information security, data science, financial technology, logic and philosophy. He is a co-founder of Madras Fintech Services Pvt. Ltd, a Chennai-based company incorporated in 2019. The company is a member of the Information Systems Security and Privacy Committee (LITD 17/Panel 6) of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), with an esteemed clientele that includes Infineon Technologies AG, InterviewBit Pvt. Ltd, NPTI Neyveli, etc. From 2022 to 2025, Dr Sekar was with the Madras School of Economics (MSE) as their PGDM Chairman.
He did his B.E.(Hons.) in Electronics & Instrumentation and M.Sc.(Hons.) in Physics (dual degree) at BITS Pilani. In 2011, he obtained a PhD in Electrical Engineering from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium), specialising in cryptology and information security. Subsequently, he has worked in various capacities at the National University of Singapore, Indian Statistical Institute, the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, BITS Pilani (Off Campus) and MSE. He serves as a Board Member of Shankar IAS Academy’s UPSC Interviews, alongside eminent bureaucrats.
Dr Sekar has taught courses for BA, PGDM, MA, M.Stat., M.Sc., M.Tech., etc., on a wide range of subjects such as probability, statistics, decision theory, queueing theory, transportation models, linear algebra, cryptology, blockchain, information theory, algorithms, programming, logic and philosophy.
Dr Sekar has more than 20 publications in refereed journals and conferences, including top venues such as Fast Software Encryption, Information Security Conference, CT-RSA, the Computer Journal, the Journal of Computer Security and the Journal of Mathematical Cryptology. He has served on the review boards of Security Standard Research and the Journal of Information Processing Systems. He has been a part of the Indian delegation for ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 27 “Information security, cybersecurity and privacy protection” meetings since 2022 and is presently the BIS Convener for LITD 17/WG 2. A secure implementation of a 3GPP encryption standard that he co-developed is included in the LTE wireless standards.
